Doppler Vascular Imaging

The Doppler Ultrasound examination examines the flow of blood through the blood vessels in the major arteries and veins in the arms and legs. This test employs Duplex (2-D) Doppler Ultrasonography which can help to diagnose many conditions including:

  • Blood clots
  • Venous insufficiency, which is caused by poorly functioning valves in the veins of the leg
  • Arterial occlusion, which is a blocked artery
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is decreased blood circulation into the legs
  • Aneurysms, which are bulging arteries

During this procedure, the technologist can estimate how fast the blood is flowing by measuring the rate of change in its pitch or frequency. The technologist trained in sonography will press a transducer (small hand-held device) against the patient’s, skin over the area of interest, moving from one area to another, as necessary.
This test may be performed as an alternative to more invasive procedures, such as arteriography or venography, which involve the injection of contrast (dye) into the blood vessels so that they can show up clearly on X-ray images. Sonography can also aid the physician to check for injuries to your arteries or to monitor certain treatments  of one’s arteries and veins.
